Choctaw Gathering in Bakersfield CA
Okla Chahta Clan of California's purpose is to bring the traditions and culture of our ancestors and our family in
Oklahoma & Mississippi to you, our clan here in the West. Each year we hold a gathering of the people, which include our families in
California and surrounding western region states and join them with our Chief, Asst Chief, Council Members, Culture Bearers
and other members of the Nation in Oklahoma. If you have never attended one of our gatherings you are really missing a great treat.
For this years gathering we are focusing on Heritage and Culture
Classes to teach
traditional way of making pottery
how to make your Choctaw dress with emphasis on the diamond work
how to dance the Choctaw dances - much different than pow wow dancing
corn husk doll
beading
Choctaw food booth talk about food of our ancestors and taste a sample of Tanchi Labona
CCYA with Tim Tingle will do a reenactment of "When Turkey Grew Feathers"
we will have a stickball demonstration as well as Joey Tom on site to teach you about the game
Les Williston will be on hand to show you and demonstrate the weaponry of our ancestors
We have our Okla Chahta Store where were sale Choctaw items - (All profits support the cost of the gathering (s).
Chief Pyle and Asst Chief Gary Batton along with the Council Members are available for you to talk with
Dance troupes from Oklahoma come to share and teach the traditional dances and their meanings,
Language department will be on hand
We will have children's games from our ancestors
